Kelp remains, Western Tasmania

Kelp remains on a west Tasmanian beach.

Since the 1950’s, water temperatures have increased around Tasmania.  Giant kelp flourished in the cool, nutrient-rich water currents which are now being displaced by warmer, nutrient poor-waters.  Giant kelp forests are rapidly disappearing along with the habitat of many marine species. (2019)
